EVIL is LIVE BACKWARDS: The Spiritual Meaning of Evil

What if the most profound spiritual truth you could ever know was hiding in plain sight? It’s a revelation so chillingly simple it’s reflected in a mirror: “evil” is “live” spelled backwards.
At first glance, this feels like a clever coincidence. However, if you slow down and reflect, you’ll discover the spiritual meaning of evil. At its core, is a profound spiritual reality that corrupts the very best parts of us, leading us by agreement to live backwards, in direct opposition to our design.
The Nature of the Fall
The spiritual meaning of evil inverts what is whole and pure. It turns joy into bitterness, love into manipulation, and our purpose into confusion. When we choose to be obstinate and resist the plan of God, we give in to a spiritual gravity that pulls us away from His love and the truth of who we were created to be. This force leaves us turned around, confused, and out of alignment with the very source of true life.
Living Backwards
When we live in sin, giving ourselves over to toxic relationships, harmful thoughts, and disobedience, we begin to live in reverse. This is the spiritual meaning of evil: instead of moving forward in faith, we retreat into fear. Instead of growing in grace, we get stuck in shame. We’re technically alive, but not truly living.
I know what it feels like to live out the spiritual meaning of evil—chained by choices, lost in rebellion, numb from cycles I didn’t know how to break. What looked like freedom was actually a slow death of peace, purpose, and connection with God. If you hold grudges against people you lack forgiveness. God asked me as a babe in Christ what are you angry with them for and I didn’t know. Holding grudges just because is an indication of hatred. A sign of living backward.
This is the spiritual meaning of evil in action. It will always promise life but deliver emptiness. Sin will always take you further than you want to go and keep you longer than you want to stay. This is why our tests, trials, and tribulations can be seen as an act of grace from God, because they are the very things that pull us out of the comfortable stagnation of “living backwards.” If Satan has you, he doesn’t need to fight you; he’ll let you be comfortable in your chaos. Remember to resist him and he will flee—it’s your first step toward running forward again.
Surrender Brings Life Forward
But here’s the good news: Jesus didn’t come to condemn us—He came to restore us. He came to break the backward cycle that is the spiritual meaning of evil, and lead us into true life. He came to reverse the profound truth that evil is live backwards. With Him, we walk forward, not in our own strength, but in surrender. Life where joy isn’t tied to circumstances, but rooted in God. Life that is holy, humble, and healed.
Romans 6:13 (NIV) states, Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.
Surrender isn’t weakness—it’s how we begin to really live. It is our ultimate strategy and weapon in spiritual warfare against evil, and a moment of powerful defiance in the face of temptation. This is the essence of the battle between evil vs. good—a daily choice for your heart, your mind, and soul. To truly walk away from evil is to walk into the arms of Jesus, and live the life we were meant for: one that honors God in our thoughts, our actions, our relationships, and even our desires. A life that is fully surrendered is a life that is truly alive.
Choose Life Over Evil

Every day we have a choice: Will I live forward or backward? Will I follow Christ into freedom, or follow sin into cycles? One leads to life. The other leads to destruction.
If you’re tired of living backwards, there’s grace for you. There’s healing. And most of all—there’s a new beginning. Overcoming evil starts with an honest heart. God isn’t looking for your perfection. He’s looking for your surrender.
A Simple Prayer
Father, I’ve lived long enough going my own way. I come to You today with a heavy heart, humbled by the truth that the spiritual meaning of evil reveals a deep rooted bond of blindly living a corrupt and spiritually stagnate life. I confess that in moments of struggle, I have felt myself living backwards, a tragic reflection that evil is live backwards. I have experienced how sin promises freedom but delivers emptiness, pulling me further from the true life You intended for me and I don’t want that any more.
Lord, I know that life is an ongoing spiritual warfare of evil vs. good. I ask for Your strength to resist temptation and for the grace to overcome evil in every area of my life. I offer myself to You, a willing vessel. Help me to choose Your Will daily. I know that true life is found not in my own strength, but in Your perfect will.
Thank you for the gift of grace and a new beginning. I surrender my all to You, my past, my pain, my desires, my future, I choose life and that more abundantly. I chose to live for you and to abide on the straight and narrow path. I choose You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Final Thought
Let today be the day you stop living backwards. Come out of witchcraft, spiritualism, occult practices, idolatry, bitterness, and deep unforgiveness!
Turn from evil. Turn to God. And finally—start to live.
