I Never Knew You:Understanding the Dangers of Empty Works and the Call to True Obedience

Introduction:
When Jesus said,“Your works are of iniquity, I never knew you” (Matthew 7:23), He wasn’t speaking to unbelievers outside the church—He was warning people inside who looked religious but lacked a true relationship with Him. This is a sobering reminder that not every work done in His name…is actually done in His Name and therefore is NOT accepted. God desires our hearts before our hands.
What Does “Iniquity” Mean?
Definition: Iniquity in the Bible means immorality, blatant sin, or injustice. It goes deeper than just sin — it is crookedness of the heart. It speaks to willful disobedience, rebellion, or twisting what God has commanded. While sin may be a single act, iniquity is the condition of a heart that resists God’s ways and chooses a lifestyle of self-will over His truth (Isaiah 59:2). These individuals will hear I never knew you on judgment day.
What Are “Works” Biblically?
In Scripture, works are not empty rituals or man-made traditions, but the outward expressions of obedience and worship to God. They are the visible fruit of an inward faith. James 2:17 reminds us that “faith without works is dead.” True works are born out of love, humility, and surrender — reflecting mercy, justice, and faithfulness as God desires (Micah 6:8).
This is why God says, ‘I never knew you’—because the works done without obedience are rooted in iniquity. Jesus showed that many will boast of their works—prophesying, casting out devils, performing miracles—yet He will reject them because they lacked genuine surrender (Matthew 7:22-23).

“Iniquity” shows the heart posture against God, while “works” shows the heart posture toward God.
Parable of the Sower: 3 Disobeidient Heart Postures
He is not saying we had a relationship at one point and you turned from your first love. He said I never knew you. That means your heart had one of the first 3 conditions in the parable of the sower. You never surrendered your heart to God. The seeds by wayside represents a hardened heart, that outright rejects God and His word. The shallow heart is represented by the seeds that fell on the rock (Jesus), took hold of the word which sprung forth faith, but when tested let go of God, His word, the faith, and withered away.
The next seed fell unto thorny ground, and as it growed the thorns did too and choked the seed. This is a representation of a spiritually congested heart, all of the thorns made growth uncomfortable, impossible, and suffocated the word of God in these individuals. The fourth seed is not at risk of hearing I never knew you. This person accepted the word of God, led a holy life and is a disciple of Christ.
False Light and False Prophets
Paul warned: “Satan himself transforms into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed” (2 Corinthians 11:14–15).
- These are false disciples who appear godly but deny God’s power and authority.
- Jesus said in Matthew 24:24 that “false Christs and false prophets will rise…insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”
But the true elect cannot be fooled because their trust and discernment come from almighty God.
The Heart Issues That Separate Us From God
God sent His messengers, the elect to warn:
- You NEVER gave your heart to God.
- You don’t have a teachable spirit.
- You are disobedient, dishonest, and manipulative.
- You are not a good steward, your actions and behavior do not glorify God
- You make excuses instead of humbling yourself.
- You refuse to examine yourself and walk in pride.
- You don’t listen to the Holy Spirit.
- You feed on too many spiritual plates and are confused.
- You ignored the hungry, widows, and orphans (James 1:27).
- You never won souls for God because your works were darkness.
- You lived by “my will be done,” not “Thy will be done.”
This spirit mirrors Satan, who in pride was cast out of heaven with a third of the angels (Revelation 12:4). We all know THAT spirit will never be allowed in heaven.
Luke 10:19–20 – True Authority in Christ
Jesus said: “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy…notwithstanding, rejoice not that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.”

The true measure of success is not spiritual power but salvation—our names in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
A Form of Godliness But Denying the Power (2 Timothy 3:5)
To deny God’s power means to resist His authority and presence. Like the seven sons of Sceva (Acts 19:15-16), who tried to cast out demons without relationship or authority from God, they heard: “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?”
Being unequipped and in the flesh leads to spiritual defeat and physical harm.
The Children of God Recognized by Love
Jesus said, “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35).
- The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37) showed love in action.
- Dorcas (Acts 9:36) was remembered for her charity. Charity is another word for love in he bible.
- Jesus Himself declared: “If I be lifted up, I will draw all men unto me” (John 12:32).

True children of God lift Him up in word and deed, not self.
Obedience vs. Disobedience
- Obedience opens favor: “If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land” (Isaiah 1:19).
- Disobedience brings destruction and damnation: Saul lost his kingdom for disobedience (1 Samuel 15:22–23) and in Luke 16:19-31 the rich man ended up in hell wanted to warn his relatives not to come there.
A Sincere Prayer of Repentance
“Lord, I repent for every act of disobedience, pride, and rebellion. I decree and declare that I believe and accept the authority of Jesus Christ, who gives me power to overcome all evil. Help me live a life pleasing to You so my name remains in the Lamb’s Book of Life. I bind the flesh, the cares of this world, and my own will. I surrender to Your will today, tomorrow, and always. Order my steps, keep my mind stayed on You, and may I hear: ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.’ In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
